I am running for Dumfries Town Council because I believe I can bring a fresh outlook to the Town Council. There are pressing issues facing our community and I want to be a part of the solution. Local governments need more funds to supply needed services. Citizens should have confidence that their needs, including housing, safety, and jobs will be met. We need more retail businesses in our town so that we don’t have to go outside of Dumfries for our basic essentials.
I grew up in Alexandria, VA, but I have lived in Prince William County for the past 20 years. I have lived in the Town of Dumfries since 2014. This year, I started a small business here and I believe in some ways our local government should be run like a business to remain fiscally sound. In other ways, however, it should be run with us as residents in mind. With the gaming tax revenue generated by the Rose, there is sufficient funding available to offer more community programs and we need to examine our expenditures very carefully.
I am well qualified for this position. I have a background of over 15 years of experience in the finance industry and most of my career has been in commercial lending. I have served on several boards and have a strong working knowledge of parliamentary procedure. Currently, I serve as Treasurer of the Economic Development Authority of the Town of Dumfries. I have been an advocate for positive changes in this community for many years and have often times publicly voiced my opinion on matters even when it was unpopular.
I have three grown daughters 32, 28, and 25 and two grandsons 7, and 9 months old. I want the Town of Dumfries to continue to be a wonderful place for all for generations to come. It would be my privilege to serve the Citizen of Dumfries as a member of the Town Council.
While we know that the current Town Council has voted to build an amazing community recreation center that will be equipped with an indoor pool, it will likely take at least 2 years to be completed. Our seniors and youth should have sustaining daily activities to do today. Some of our neighborhoods are badly in need of streetlights and sidewalks. We need more walkable space like in areas surrounding Main Street. I will help to find funding resources through grants and scrutinizing waste in the budget to help fund more desirable long-standing programs for everyone.
Serving the public is like building a bridge of trust. That bridge is only as strong as our elected officials want it to be and it must be built on being open and honest about how the Town’s money is being spent. I was disappointed to learn that the spouse of an elected official was paid almost $5,000 to provide electrical services to the Town without a public bidding process. In fact, at the time of service the spouse did not even hold a business license in the Town of Dumfries which means they did not pay taxes on the revenue earned. I’ll work hard to put an end to wasteful spending and potential conflicts of interest.
Dumfries is growing rapidly and no doubt about it people are visiting our little Town more and more. With the opening of the Rose Gaming Resort, the proposed Waterfront district, planned changes on Main Street, including the new housing project, and the widening of Route 1, the Town of Dumfries will see massive changes in the future. It is important to manage that growth in a way that benefits everyone. I will advocate for investing in our infrastructure, supporting our small businesses and attracting the right businesses while creating well-paying jobs right here in Dumfries.
